Daal curry is the most common in Sri Lanka as it is cheap, easy to make and cook relatively in less time. The daal is made first by washing it and boiling it and then adding more ingredients such as tomatoes, spices, onions and coconut milk to give it a rich taste and velvety texture. This daal curry can be eaten with an oily Paratha, whole wheat roti or with boiled rice.
3. Sweet and Sour Fish Curry
Sri Lankans love to eat fish. Fish is nearly on top of the Sri Lankan street food’s list. The sweet and sour fish curry is a mixture of sugariness and tartness in one dish and in one bite. The fish is deep fried and then soy sauce and sweet sauces are added to it. Then again the fish is fried along with onions to give it a different flavor. The final result is a soft fish which is easy to chew. The dish is best accompanied by rice and Paratha.
4. Jackfruit Curry (Polos)
Jackfruit is loved by Sri Lankan people and they have tested and made different dishes using Jackfruit at different stages of its life cycle. Unripe Jackfruit it used to make the Polos in Sri Lanka. Jackfruit it cut into small cubes and then boiled. To give it a rich flavor spices such as salt, pepper, chili, turmeric and different leaves are added. Finally to absorb all the flavors into the fruit’s cubes, coconut milk is added and left to get soaked. This results in all flavor being diffused into the cubes. The final dish’s texture resembles of potato.
5. Gotu Kola Sambol (pennywort salad)
The ready-made Sri Lankan street food available at almost all restaurants at all times is the Gotu Kola Sambol. Gotu Kola Sambol dish doesn’t goes through any cooking stages. Gotu Kola is herb that also has medical properties, its leaves are chopped and mixed with other raw vegetables such as, tomatoes, onions, carrots. To give a flavor spices such as chili, salt and pepper is added. This makes it a salad and a healthy food for Sri Lankans.
6. Pol Sambol (coconut relish)
While everywhere else in the world we eat coconut rarely, Sri Lankans consider coconut as a snack food and it is important part of their diet. Pot Sambol is a side dish with a main dish. Coconuts are chopped and red onions, red chili, lemon juice and fish is added to it, then mixed and eaten in the same bowl.
7. Wood apple
One of the healthiest Sri Lankan street food is wood apple which can be eaten raw and it is considered as a go to food. The wood apple can also be made into a juice. The fruit is put into a blender and then blended with sugar and some water. Finally it is poured into glasses and served chilled with cubes of ice. It can serve as a relaxing cool summer drink.
8. Beetroot Curry
The beetroot curry is one of the most delicious Sri Lankan street food dish. The beet is cut into bite sized cubes, sprinkled with curry leaves and cinnamon and then it is cooked. The cooked beet is soft and sweet in flavor. This curry can be eaten along with boiled rice or as a sweet after a meal.
9. Deep Fried Chicken and Fried Rice
